A lifelong connection with painting and the natural world

I have loved drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. From childhood, I was fascinated by the natural world and the incredible detail found within it, the delicate structure of feathers, the patterns on insects, the changing colours of plants through the seasons and the small moments of beauty that often go unnoticed.

Painting has always been a way of looking more closely. It is a slow process of observation, patience and understanding, allowing me to capture not only the appearance of a subject, but also the atmosphere, character and quiet presence of the natural world.

For me, wildlife painting is about more than creating an image. It is about developing a deeper connection with the landscape and the creatures that inhabit it, taking the time to notice the details that are so easily missed in our increasingly fast-paced world.

Inspired by Cornwall's landscapes and hidden wildlife

After moving to Cornwall in 2017, my relationship with nature became much stronger. Cornwall is known throughout the world for its dramatic coastline, beaches and rugged cliffs, but I became increasingly drawn to the quieter landscapes beyond the shoreline, the ancient hedgerows, woodland paths, river valleys, fields and the wild expanses of Bodmin Moor.

Living in Cornwall encouraged me to slow down and pay attention to the changing rhythms of the natural world.

I began noticing which wildflowers were appearing at different times of year, which birds were singing in the hedgerows, how the light changed across the landscape, and the hidden wildlife living within the countryside around me.

The hedgerows and moors of Cornwall contain an extraordinary richness of life. A walk through the landscape can reveal a bird resting among branches, a moth hidden amongst autumn foliage, a small mammal moving through grasses or the subtle colours of plants and fungi that transform with the seasons.

These observations form the foundation of my artwork.

Traditional oil painting and the craft of observation

I work primarily in traditional oil paints, creating paintings through a meticulous process of building up numerous layers of transparent colour glazes.

This historic oil painting technique allows light to pass through each layer of colour before reflecting back to the viewer, creating depth, luminosity and a richness that cannot be achieved through a single application of paint.

Each painting develops slowly. Layers are carefully considered, colours are adjusted, and details are refined over time to capture the extraordinary complexity found in nature.

A bird's feathers are never simply one colour. Within a single feather there can be subtle variations of blue, violet, brown, grey and gold depending on the light. Moss contains countless shades of green, earth and shadow. The wings of a moth reveal intricate patterns and delicate textures that only become visible through close observation.

My aim is to capture these details with honesty and precision, celebrating the remarkable beauty that exists within the natural world.

British wildlife, natural history and the overlooked beauty of nature

My work focuses on British wildlife and the landscapes that support it, from river birds and woodland species to insects, moths and the creatures that live quietly amongst our hedgerows.

I am particularly inspired by subjects that are often overlooked. A crow, a moth, a harvest mouse or a small woodland bird may be familiar sights, yet each contains extraordinary complexity when viewed closely.

Through my paintings, I hope to encourage a greater appreciation of Britain's native wildlife and the habitats that sustain it.

These paintings are not simply studies of individual species. They are explorations of connection, between wildlife and landscape, between changing seasons and the places we call home.

The influence of Bodmin Moor, folklore and ancient landscapes

Bodmin Moor is one of my greatest sources of inspiration. This ancient Cornish landscape is a place of remarkable character, shaped by centuries of history, folklore and the forces of nature.

Its granite tors, open moorland, rivers, valleys and windswept grasses provide a unique habitat for an incredible diversity of wildlife. Stonechats, wheatears, skylarks, wild ponies, insects and countless plant species all form part of this living landscape.

Beyond its natural history, Bodmin Moor carries a sense of mystery and connection to the past. Ancient pathways, traditional stories and local folklore are woven into the landscape, creating a place where nature and history exist together.

This relationship between wildlife, landscape and folklore continues to influence my work, inspiring paintings that celebrate both the visible beauty of nature and the stories hidden within it.
