The Bordered Sallow Moth is a celebration of one of Britain's most remarkable yet often overlooked insects. Rather than presenting the moth as a scientific study, this painting explores the extraordinary complexity, structure and subtle beauty found within the natural world when it is observed with patience and care.

Every original painting begins with careful observation. I spend time studying the intricate patterns, colour variations and textures that make each species unique before beginning the slow process of painting in oils. My work is built gradually using numerous transparent layers of colour glazes, allowing light to travel through successive layers of paint before reflecting back to the viewer. This traditional technique creates a depth and luminosity that cannot be achieved by applying opaque colour alone.

The bordered sallow provides an ideal subject for this method of painting. At first glance it appears modest in colour, yet closer observation reveals an extraordinary range of subtle earth pigments, warm ochres, muted umbers, soft greys and delicate olive tones, all combined with intricate markings that serve as remarkable natural camouflage. Each layer of glaze allows these colours to interact optically, creating the richness and depth seen in the original oil painting.

Set against a restrained dark background, the composition allows the form of the moth to emerge gradually from the surrounding shadow. The contrast between darkness and carefully controlled light draws attention to the minute scales of the wings, the fine hairs of the thorax and the elegant structure of the insect itself. The background is intentionally understated, allowing the viewer's attention to remain entirely on the subject and encouraging a slower, more contemplative way of looking.

Although moths are frequently overshadowed by butterflies, they represent one of the most diverse and ecologically important groups of insects in Britain. They pollinate wildflowers, provide an essential food source for birds and bats, and are vital indicators of the health of our natural environment. Their extraordinary diversity and often overlooked beauty continue to provide endless inspiration for my work.

Since moving to Cornwall in 2017, the landscapes of the county have profoundly influenced my painting. While Cornwall is widely celebrated for its coastline, I have become increasingly fascinated by its quieter landscapes, ancient hedgerows, woodland edges, river valleys and the open expanses of Bodmin Moor. These habitats support an extraordinary diversity of wildlife, much of which remains unseen by those passing through. My work seeks to celebrate these overlooked subjects and encourage closer observation of the natural world.
