The kingfisher is one of Britain's most recognisable and treasured birds, admired for its vivid colour, elegance and elusive nature. This original oil painting captures a kingfisher resting quietly along the banks of the River Bedalder, surrounded by the textures, colours and atmosphere of its natural riverside habitat.

Rather than focusing only on the striking blue and orange tones for which the kingfisher is famous, this painting explores the subtle complexity of the bird's appearance, the changing colours created by light, and the relationship between the bird and the landscape it inhabits.

Since moving to Cornwall in 2017, I have become increasingly inspired by the county's hidden landscapes, from ancient hedgerows and woodland streams to the rivers and valleys that support a remarkable diversity of wildlife. Cornwall is often celebrated for its coastline, but its inland habitats contain countless stories waiting to be discovered.

The kingfisher represents the beauty found in moments of patience and observation. Often glimpsed briefly before disappearing along the river, it rewards those who take the time to watch and understand the natural world. This philosophy of close observation is central to my work as an artist.

Each painting is created slowly, with careful attention given to the smallest details, from individual feathers and subtle colour changes to the atmosphere of the landscape itself. My aim is not simply to depict wildlife, but to celebrate the craftsmanship and complexity found within the natural world.
